Learning how to SEO your website and improve rankings is critical for being successful in online marketing. There are a number of key elements necessary to make your website optimized for higher rankings in the SERPs. I will show the 12 most important factors that relate to good SEO practices to use to ensure the search engines rank your website favorably.

The Wikipedia definition of SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the process of increasing the quality and quantity of website traffic, increasing visibility of a website or a web page to users. So in order to get a webpage to rank well in the search engines, certain steps must be followed in order to satisfy this optimization process.

Don’t Make These Rookie Mistakes


There are some practices on a blog post that should never be used for SEO. Writing to please search engines don’t always relate to good grammar being used for the end user. Chances are if it doesn’t make any sense reading it then users will not click on the blog post.

Leaving out connecting words like, and, is, are, too, etc, makes it harder for the end user to understand what the blog post is about. Consequently, traffic to your website will be nonexistent.


This is one of the important key elements in creating good SEO practices when submitting posts to the search engines. Use good grammar not only in your content but throughout the whole post or page.


I realize that authors sometimes see a search term in a keyword tool that has a high search volume but no competition. There is a reason for this. It is bad grammar and by thinking you found a golden nugget, is actually just fools gold.



Good quality writing doesn’t use bad grammar. The end users are much more educated now than years past when almost anything was acceptable. Today, it is expected for authors to use good grammar and sound educated when they write.


It is mystifying to me how authors still don’t use a spellcheck program to correct misspellings of their website content. This is a  telltale sign that is very unprofessional. In most wordprocessor programs one-click spellcheck can be performed to correct any misspellings and use of bad grammar.


 Misspelled words are a no-no and are easy to fix. This should be a mandatory habit for any online marketer to perform. Just Do It.

User experience has been around longer than the Internet itself. It is actually a sales term which correlates to by providing better user experience the more likely the user will be inclined to buy what you are providing.


Think about it for a moment… Is your website easy for the user to find information and follow the yellow-brick road to your CTA?


Easy navigation creates fewer user distractions that lead to better user experience – and hence – better conversions and sales.


Breaking up your content into smaller paragraphs makes your content easier to digest and easier to read. This creates an environment that helps keep the user on your page longer – which also happens to be a key factor in search engine rankings. This is otherwise known as Bounce Rate. The higher the bounce rate the lower ranking your post will get from the search engines.


Breaking up your information in more manageable bites helps create a good user experience because your information is easier to read and adds to their understanding of your content. This works toward the user staying on your page longer, which IS a ranking factor of your webpage.


This leads to building trust between you and the end user which effects your overall conversion rate.

The above site is actually a real website. My honest opinion about this site if I ever landed there I would immediately leave. There are so many distractions I wouldn’t know where to begin. It is extremely confusing, no apparent navigation to find the information I may be seeking.



Did you know that a recent study was performed about attention spans of today’s Internet users? It was concluded that the users today have less attention span than a goldfish. Alarming? Yes indeed. That is another reason why it is so critical to provide a good, clear, easy on the eyes navigation for your user.


The search engines are getting smarter in analyzing what a webpage is about and expect an author to write with the end user in mind. That is, Google, Bing, and Yahoo all want UX, good User Experience. this is what users expect from search engines in the first place, to deliver the quality content that the user is searching for. If the search engines fail to deliver enough times people won’t be using that search engine anymore.


This is why it is so important for an author to deliver clear, concise, navigation to maximize the chances of successful good user experience. This builds trust between the user and the author which should relate to better conversions. Or at least this is where trust is first achieved.

In the image above I used an illustration of a site selling Logos. If you follow the navigation there is a clearly defined direction that all the reviews lead to – the final sales conversion bubble at the bottom of the picture. The intended path through the navigation is well defined which is not confusing for the end user – and hence – leads to higher conversions.


Proper CTA placement (call to action) is critical where to insert in your post or page. Also having the right amount of CTA’s are crucial to not creating confusion for the end user. Since no two websites are the same nor are everyone’s writing style the same it is impossible to actually have just the right place for a CTA on a webpage.


Have you ever heard of “split testing?” This is actually the most common way to find the right location on a webpage as well as which words to use in order to get the best conversions. Normally the CTA of a webpage is at the end of the page. I would suggest an experiment with the placement as well as what words are used in the CTA.


Go to Google Analytics to find out which location and which words lead to the best conversions. More than likely every page will be just a little different. Depending on the niche, the subject of the webpage, and the end user are all factors in the best location and words used for getting the best conversions.



Using Bad Language is another no-no. People hear bad language every day and don’t want to see it when they are looking for online help or solutions. Again, this is a telltale sign that the author is inexperienced in applying communication skills. Our language is full of adjectives to describe what it is you are trying to say – without using bad language.


All of these SEO factors contribute to the overall rankings of a website. Using them all together as shown will allow the maximum benefit to reach a high ranking. Knowing how to use keywords in an article is another key factor in determining rankings.

12 Key SEO OnPage Factors For Websites

  1. Keyword in Post Title – This is a must for proper SEO. This tells the search engine the subject of the webpage and how to interpret the content. Most content online is first researched using a keyword tool in deciding what the end users are using for their search terms. If this exact keyword term is in the title of the webpage, the search engines now know how to rank the webpage.
  2. Keyword in Meta Title – The Meta Title is the title of the post that is manually entered in your SEO plugin. For example, I use the All-In-One-SEO plugin, and there are others, like Yoast. On my Plugin just below the post, is a block for the title to be manually inserted. This is called the Meta-title which is the same as the post title.
  3. Keyword Term in Meta Description – This is also critical and a leading factor in ranking the webpage. Authors are given a choice of what is displayed in the Meta description box of their SEO plugin. If left blank, the search engines usually put the first sentence of the paragraph as the description of the webpage. With WordPress, the author can select which sentence they desire for the description. Having the keyword in this description adds authority to the webpage.
  4. Have one link to an Authority Site – It is wise to provide a link to an outside source, such as Wikipedia, as this adds a type of backlink as proof to what your webpage is about.
  5. Have at least One Internal Link – By providing another internal link to another webpage you are distinguishing your site as an authority about the niche your content is about.
  6. Using Keyword throughout webpage – It has been said that overuse of a keyword is considered keyword stuffing, and frowned upon by Google. This could cause a penalty. Some sites claim no more than 4% of total words can be a keyword. I wouldn’t overuse keyword, but I also suggest making your content easily readable and make sense to the user.
  7. Use Latent Keywords – By using Latent keywords your content is more readable and actually gives you more keywords to rank for in a webpage.
  8. Misspelled Words and Good Grammar- This was touched on above. Do Not publish any webpage that has misspelled words. This is a red flag to creating good users experience which also reflects overall rankings of the webpage. Also using good grammar shows authority in your writing communication.
  9. Speed of Website – It is known that because of mobile Internet use that if your webpage is slow in being displayed this is a big ranking factor. Faster is better. By removing flash and other non-essential plugins speed will increase for your website.
  10. Use a Responsive Website – Having a responsive website means that it will automatically adjust the size of the webpage to the size of the monitor it is getting displayed upon. That is, a webpage will look different on a smartphone versus a tablet or even a desktop.
  11. Using An SSL Certificate – An SSL Certificate (Secure Socket Layered) means your website is a trusted site with encrypted data to protect the end users personal information as well as conducting money transactions.
  12. Having Too Many Outgoing Links – This is obviously a bad idea because the traffic you have worked so hard to bring to your website is now leaving via a link. This is a ranking factor in creating a good user experience.

If these steps I have outlined are followed a higher ranking for every published webpage will be achieved. There are other ranking factors, of course, which are kept secret as far as how much they contribute to the overall ranking position.
